During SHIFT NYC this week, Commvault announced Commvault Cloud Unity, an AI-driven platform that brings together data security, cyber recovery, and identity resilience across multi-cloud, hybrid, and on premises environments.

In the keynote, the term ResOps took centerstage. I had heard the term before but not in the context of how Commvault is applying it within the Cloud Unity platform.

If the term is new to you too, Resilience Operations (ResOps) is a strategy for business continuity in the face of disruption. It is a broader IT and security discipline for maintaining business operations during outages or attacks.

The modern practice and the term Resilience Operations originated in the financial sector in 2018 when UK regulators introduced new requirements designed to address operational disruptions like cyberattacks.

My ResOps Wishlist

So what would be the top 3 items if I were putting together a ResOps Wish List?

1. Wouldn’t it be great if an organization could prevent critical systems from stopping in the first place, rather than just recovering after a failure?
2. What if that same organization cloud close  the gaps between IT, security, and identity management to ensure data is monitored, tested, and can be recovered with integrity?
3. And since we’re waving our magic wand of resiliency, what if we could enable an organization to maintain business continuity during cyberattacks, outages, and AI-driven disruptions?

How Would Cloud Unity Fit into that ResOps Wish List?

Cloud Unity gives a centralized solution to organizations to manage and protect their data in the era of cyber threats, data sprawl, and the complexities of managing disparate security tools.

Key features that make it impactful include AI enabled discovery and recommendations, a unified view of protected and unprotected data, and the ability to perform identity resilience actions such as quickly detecting and rolling back malicious changes.

6 things about Cloud Unity that I Find Impactful

Unified Data Security. Cloud Unity incorporates AI-enabled tools for data discovery, classification, and access governance, leveraging technology from Commvault’s acquisition of Satori Cyber. The goal is consistent protection policies across all data locations.

1. Advanced Cyber Recovery. AI-powered Synthetic Recovery technology identifies and recovers clean data while isolating and removing compromised data during a cyber incident. This streamlines recovery process and reduces downtime.
2. Identity Resilience. This new capability allows for the detection, logging, and real-time rollback of malicious changes made to identity systems like Active Directory, moving beyond traditional data backups to protect the entire system.
3. Centralized Management and Visibility. A single, unified interface monitors and manages protected and unprotected workloads across the entire IT landscape. It provides a consolidated view of risk exposure and helps identify gaps in data protection coverage.
4. AI-enabled Automation: The platform utilizes AI to automate tasks such as workload discovery and policy recommendations, aiming to improve efficiency and reduce manual effort in data protection operations.
5. Risk visibility: Cloud Unity gives administrators a clear view of their risk posture by analyzing discovered cloud resources for protection gaps and providing reports on protected versus unprotected workloads.

In essence, Commvault Cloud Unity seeks to simplify and strengthen enterprise resilience by consolidating critical data protection functions into a single intelligent platform. It does so in a way that directly addresses the challenges of modern and complex IT environments
