Episode Summary: When the Market Converges

The market is converging.

Networking, security, and cloud operations are no longer separate conversations inside the enterprise. They are colliding at the operational layer, driven by hybrid environments, AI assisted operations, and growing pressure to reduce complexity without losing control.

In this ClearTech Loop Market Perspective episode, Jo Peterson sits down with Dan DeBacker, Chief Product Officer at Extreme Networks, to discuss what convergence looks like in practice and why simplicity, policy, and cloud design are increasingly inseparable decisions.

Market Perspective Lends

“AI doesn’t tolerate fragmentation. The more intelligence we embed into operations, the more exposed complexity becomes.”  — Jo Peterson

This edition is framed through AI Enhanced Cloud Operations, an operating model where AI tightens visibility, policy, and control across cloud, network, and security environments to reduce complexity and accelerate decision making.

Three Market Signals

Simplicity as an Operational Requirement

“If you have to integrate and manage multiple UI experiences, multiple policies, multiple ways of doing things… that’s complexity. Our goal is to reduce friction by bringing those together.”
Dan DeBacker

Complexity is no longer an inconvenience. It is an operational risk. As environments scale across hybrid and multi cloud models, teams are spending more time managing interfaces and policies than improving outcomes.

Policy as the Control Plane

“When you talk about NAC policy, VPN policy, Zero Trust policy ideally they should not live in silos. The next evolution is a unified policy engine.” Dan DeBacker

As complexity increases, policy becomes the organizing mechanism. The market is moving toward unified policy models that span access, identity, and enforcement, with policy acting as shared infrastructure across domains.

Cloud and On Premises as Continuum

“One of the shifts we’re seeing is customers treat on prem and cloud as a unified continuum, so data never has to leave the environment if that’s their choice.” — Dan DeBacker

Rather than debating cloud versus on premises, organizations are designing for flexibility. Cloud is becoming an experience rather than a location, with governance, regulation, and business need shaping where control lives.

What You Will Learn

  • Why market convergence is showing up first in operations
  • How simplicity becomes an operational requirement as environments scale
  • Why policy is emerging as the connective tissue across networking, security, and cloud operations
  • How the cloud and on premises continuum supports sovereignty and agility
  • How AI driven operations expose fragmentation and accelerate convergence

My Take: Convergence Through the Lens of AI Enhanced Cloud Operations

This conversation sits squarely within what I see as one of the most important shifts heading into 2026: AI Enhanced Cloud Operations.

As AI becomes embedded across cloud environments, the tolerance for operational fragmentation disappears. Multiple control planes, disconnected policy engines, and siloed visibility slow response and increase risk. Simplicity moves from preference to requirement.

Policy is becoming the connective tissue between networking, security, and cloud operations. Cloud and on premises are no longer opposing strategies. They are part of a single operational continuum shaped by governance, regulation, and business reality.

Platforms are emerging not as a trend, but as a response to operational pressure. For IT leaders in 2026, the challenge is not whether convergence is happening. It is whether their operational foundation can support AI driven environments without sacrificing control, sovereignty, or speed.
